Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I have to be to join?
You have to be between 13 and 17 to join.

How much does it cost?
All you have to pay is a small weekly subscription charge - which at present is about £1 a week. Activities such as flying, shooting and sports are all Government funded.

What will I do if I do join?
You will take part in a carefully thought out training programme, which initially involves studying some ATC / RAF / aviation related subjects. As soon as you pass your first exam, you can do all the practical activities.

When do I get my uniform?
As soon as you have proved your commitment to the ATC to your Commanding Officer, you will be supplied with your uniform. Until then you are requested to wear school uniform. Air Cadet uniform is provided free.

Who is in charge of an ATC Squadron?
The ATC is largely supported by the Royal Air Force, and as such the ATC is staffed by reserve RAF Officers, approved Warrant Officers and Civilian Instructors.

Am I forced to do things that I don’t want to do?
No! You join the ATC to learn new things, do new activities, meet people and have fun. You will never be made to do something that you think is dangerous or that you simply don’t like the idea of.

How long can I stay?
You can stay a cadet until you are 18 years old, or if you like you can stay on as staff.
